Day 01

Kandy

Loolkandura

Unveiling Loolkandura’s Charm – A Hike Through Tea Country (Pekoe Trail Stage 2: Galaha to Loolkandura)

Day 2 on the Pekoe Trail promises an invigorating hike with rewarding scenery, leading you from the charming town of Galaha to the historic village of Loolkandura, considered the birthplace of Ceylon tea.

Morning: A Warm Farewell to Galaha (1 hour):  Begin your day with a leisurely breakfast at your guesthouse in Galaha, enjoying the fresh mountain air and the tranquility of the hill country.  Take some time to explore the town’s local shops and soak in the friendly atmosphere before setting off on your hike.

Embracing the Tea Trails (2-3 hours):  The trail from Galaha to Loolkandura is a scenic journey, primarily following estate roads that meander through verdant tea plantations. Breathe in the invigorating aroma of freshly plucked leaves and witness the backbreaking work of tea pluckers as they navigate the slopes.  Keep your eyes peeled for glimpses of colorful birds flitting through the bushes, adding to the vibrant tapestry of the landscape.

A Refreshing Pitstop in Deltota (1 hour):  As you reach the halfway point in Deltota, a bustling market town, take a well-deserved break.  Explore the vibrant stalls overflowing with fresh produce, local crafts, and perhaps even indulge in a refreshing cup of Ceylon tea, the very beverage that put Sri Lanka on the map.

Afternoon: Ascending to Loolkandura’s Embrace (2-3 hours):  Refreshed and rejuvenated, continue your hike towards Loolkandura.  The path gradually ascends, offering breathtaking panoramas of the rolling tea estates and distant mountains.  As you approach Loolkandura, keep an eye out for remnants of its historic tea production past, a testament to the village’s significant role in Sri Lanka’s tea industry.

Watagoda

Pekoe Trail Adventure Stage 4 & 5 (Thalawatenna to Watagoda)

Get ready for a challenging and rewarding day on the Pekoe Trail! Today’s journey takes you through Stages 4 and 5, traversing a diverse landscape from Thalawatenna to Watagoda. Here’s a breakdown of what to expect:

Morning: Thalawatenna (Start):  Begin your day in Thalawatenna, a charming village nestled amidst rolling hills. Enjoy a hearty breakfast and soak in the fresh mountain air before setting off.

Undulating Tea Plantations (3-4 hours): The initial section features a gradual ascent through sprawling tea plantations. Breathe in the invigorating aroma of freshly plucked leaves and marvel at the meticulous rows of tea bushes blanketing the landscape.  Keep an eye out for tea pluckers diligently working their way through the fields.  This stage offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding valleys.

Lunch Break:  Enjoy a delicious packed lunch at a designated rest stop or a local tea shop (depending on your chosen itinerary). Refuel and take in the scenic surroundings.

 

Afternoon: Stage 5: Diverse Terrain and Local Encounters (4-5 hours):  The afternoon presents a more diverse challenge.  You’ll encounter steeper inclines, sections of single-track trail, and potentially some muddy patches (depending on weather conditions). Prepare for a good workout!  The reward? Breathtaking vistas, unique flora and fauna, and the chance to interact with friendly locals in small villages along the route.

Watagoda (End):  Finally, you’ll arrive at your destination for the day – Watagoda. This charming village offers a range of accommodation options, from comfortable guesthouses to traditional homestays.  Tonight, enjoy a well-deserved dinner and relax,  reminiscing about the day’s adventures.

Day 05

Kumbaloluwa

Unwinding Serenity on the Pekoe Trail (Stages 6 & 7) Today’s journey unfolds on Stages 6 & 7 of the Pekoe Trail, offering a delightful mix of serenity and breathtaking landscapes as you traverse the verdant hills of Sri Lanka’s Central Highlands.

Morning: Thalawatenna to Kumbaloluwa (Stage 6):  Embark from Thalawatenna, a charming village nestled amidst rolling hills. The initial part of the trail winds through lush tea plantations, their emerald expanse creating a visually stunning tapestry. Bogawantalawa

Stage 11: Horton Plains to Udaweriya

Morning: After a refreshing breakfast, bid farewell to Horton Plains National Park (entrance fees apply) and embark on Stage 11. The initial part involves traversing a scenic road towards Ohiya. As you descend, keep an eye out for breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes.

Midday: The trail then deviates from the road, leading you on a captivating journey through a network of villages and mountain slopes. Enjoy the scenic descent and the fresh mountain air as you make your way towards the hidden valley of Udaweriya.

Afternoon: Reach your destination for the day, Udaweriya. This captivating valley boasts breathtaking panoramas, offering a glimpse into a different facet of Sri Lanka’s diverse landscapes. Day 08

Babarakanda
